Silver collector coins

Like many other central banks around the world, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank /National Bank of Hungary/ issues coins commemorating important dates in Hungarian history and outstanding figures in Hungarian history and culture, highlighting important international sporting events, supporting environmental protection activities of international organisations and commemorating key event. The first commemorative or collector coin by the National Bank was issued in 1948, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 1848-49 revolution and war of independence. In addition to issuing the currency necessary for circulation, the central bank took over responsibility for issuing commemorative coins as well. The bank established a regular schedule for emissions of such coins, which are primarily designed for numismatic purposes.
Coins and banknotes always reflect the artistic and sculptural trends of the period in which they are issued. This is particularly true for collector coins, as they highlight the particular event itself. Consequently, it is desirable to strive for high aesthetic standards, which is why collector coins are designed by renowned coin designers and artists.
Most of the Hungarian silver collector coins are produced in two different quality, either in brilliant uncirculated (BU) or in proof (mat reliefs on mirror finished surface).
Gold collector coins are mostly struck in proof quality.

Yearly 4-5 new silver collector coins enlarge the collection of Hungarian commemorative coins within the forint currency system. Among the first such coins there were denominations of 5, 10 and 25 forint, later followed by 100, 200 and 500 forint by the growing of the precious metal prices and the production costs. After 1992 mainly sterling silver coins were struck (Ag .925 in a gross weight of 31.46 g), the denominations varied between 1000-5000 forint. Nice exceptions are the 75 forint silver issued in 1999 when the National Bank of Hungary celebrated its 75th anniversary or the 750 forint from 1998, which commemorated the 125th anniversary of the unified capital city of Hungary. We have also 4000 forint face value divided into two part like "half-pennies" (Lorantffy coin issued in 2000) or the squared silver devoted to the 100th anniversary of the Gödöllő Art Nouveau-School.
